Last Night's Vote on
the FAA
Authorization Bill
Dear Members,
Late last night the US
Senate, following an affirmative vote by the House of
Representatives, passed the FAA reauthorization bill by
a vote of 75-20.
15 Democrats stood with us and 5 Republicans voted
against for other reasons - the bill didn't go far
enough to destroy workers' rights or they don't believe
in government funding at all.
Thank you for all your phone calls and e-mails to help
stop the FAA reauthorization from passing. You made an
impact in a very short period of time to combat this
sneak attack. There simply was not enough time to
accomplish a no vote.
We mobilized a tremendous response to this back room
deal between Senate and House leadership. Mounting
efforts to block the passage of the FAA reauthorization;
making it likely that a long term extension would not be
possible this year, were thwarted when leadership
expedited the votes.
While the White House is aware of our position, a
Presidential Veto is remote. The vote results make it
clear that both Chambers would whip enough votes to
override a Presidential Veto.
We need to focus our attention on what we can do to
change this statute. That means calling on our friends
who stood with us to fight this provision and fighting
every minute between now and November to get them
elected and send enough friends to help them fight for
labor.
It is also imperative that we make sure President Obama
is reelected. If Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich or even Ron
Paul were to win the White House next year our ability
to correct this injustice will be gone forever.
We will consult with the NMB and our friends and allies
in the White House, Senate and House for a path to fix
this injustice.
This was truly a disappointing vote for labor. Thank you
again for all your work on this.
