  • UNDERFLY CAN BE HELPFUL

Dear Members,

UNDERFLY CAN BE HELPFUL

by Carol Austin MEC Scheduling Chair

Section 10 of the CBA states: Prior to the construction of lines for a given month, the Director of Crew Scheduling may establish the monthly maximum of Company time at 85, 90 or 95 hours, for any domicile with an average line construction target of 78, 83, and 88 hours. Such monthly maximum may be exceeded by underfly or by pairings picked up from other flight attendants via the ETB.

Everyone understands flying over his/her MAX HRS by the value of ETB trips or the "allowable non discipline three (3) hours". Not everyone understands how to exceed the monthly maximum when underfly is involved? This article will explain how underfly can be applied.

By CBA the crew is paid scheduled flight time or better on each leg. Additionally, any crew member may also use the accumulated underfly amount to his/her advantage, if desired. Underfly is the amount of time by which you "beat schedule" during the month. Crewmembers are allowed to exceed their monthly maximum when their actual time worked is less than their scheduled time in the bid month. This is a long standing practice which started with the pilots.

Utilizing underfly is optional and at the flight attendant's full discretion . The Company may NOT request or force you to take a trip that is "scheduled" to exceed you MAX HRS. However, the individual flight attendant may elect to apply his/her underfly to exceed his/her MAX HRS at any time within the bid month. Generally speaking, at the end of the bid month is when underfly is at its maximum .

Here is how underfly works. Whenever actual flight time is less than scheduled block time, the difference is referred to as less than schedule, beating schedule and underfly. Underfly is separately tallied for each individual flight attendant in two different places. It can be found at the bottom of the Option 2 after the last date in the bid month by the code UF or in Option 5 in an area to the left side margin called Total Under Fly.

Here are two examples of underfly usage: In July, Bob and Mary are blocked together and have flown the same schedule. At the end of the bid month they decide to acquire some additional time. Their schedule has them off on July 25 through 27th .

Bob: He decides to fly an extra trip on July 25th . He is currently at Pay Hours of 93+05 and MAX HRS of 97+51. The difference is 4+46. However, he has 3+27 of TOTAL OVER FLY for the month. To utilize the UF of 3+27 he adds it to his MAX HRS of 97+51 and that total is 101+18. He has Pay Hours of 93+05; therefore, the difference is 8 +13 (101+18 minus 93+05) . Bob only wants a day trip to Maximize for the Bid Month. In Open time: No one day trips are available at his seniority valued at more than 5+00 hours. So to obtain more than 5+00 he can "split a trip", if available, to get as close to 8+13 as possible but not exceed it . This splitting function is accomplished and monitored with the Scheduler on the phone. Bob will not be flagged for high hours.

Mary: She wants an extra two day trip originating on July 25th to achieve the most amount of time without be flagged for high hours. She is also at Pay Hours of 93+05 and MAX HRS of 97+51. The difference is 4+46. She also has 3+27 of TOTAL OVER FLY for the month. To utilize the UF of 3+27 she adds it to her MAX HRS of 97+51 and that total is 101+18. To the 101+18 she adds the "allowable three (3) hours" for a total of 104+18. She has Pay Hours of 93+05; therefore, the difference is 11 +13 ( 104+18 minus 93+05). If available, Mary needs to obtain a two day trip that gets as close to 11+13 as possible but does not exceed it so she will not be flagged for high hours. In Open time: 2 day trips worth 10+00, 10+29, 11+00 and 12+30. Mary takes the trip valued at 11+00 so she will not receive a high block letter.

When flying MAX HRS take a print out of Option 2 and 5 at that time. Save them for future referencing, if necessary. This document will be placed on WINGS and in the Flight Attendant Scheduling Department Manual.
