Dealing with Debt and Credit Problems

Are You In Trouble with Debt?

  • Is an increasing amount of your income going to pay debts?

  • Are you only paying the minimum amount on loans and credit cards?

  • Have you reached your limit on credit cards?

  • Are you using credit cards to pay for things that you used to pay for with cash?

  • Does the debt that you carry prevent you from making contributions to your retirement plan?

  • Are you experiencing worry, anxiety, or sleeplessness over your debt?

  • You've been in debt before, got out of it, but are burdened by debt again.

Take Action!

The first step to resolving debt problems is to decide on the steps to accomplish your goal. This will include making a complete list of the amounts owed and the terms of payment for each amount. Chances are that you could use some advice on how to proceed. Many books exist on eliminating debt, and your library will have numerous offerings. There are also non-profit organizations in every state, as well as a Consumer Credit Counseling Service through our Union Privilege website at: http://www.unionplus.org/money-credit/consumer-credit-counseling

They will help you identify steps that you can to take and provide you with other related services.

What about Debt Repayment Services?

Debt repayment services can work, but you should review the options available in your community, first. Before you do business in any community, check it out with your local consumer protection agency or the Better Business Bureau in the company's location. Some debt counseling service firms may charge high fees and fail to follow through on the services that they sell. Others may misrepresent the terms of debt consolidation, failing either to explain certain costs.

What the AFA-CWA EAP can do?

Your AFA-CWA EAP can refer you to services in your community when you can obtain help for problems with debt. Additionally, AFA EAP can provide resources on budgeting and money management, debt repayment and financial counseling. As always, these calls are confidential!
