Position Selection as a Result of an Equipment Downgrade
Recently a question has arisen regarding position selection when there is an
aircraft substitution that results in a downgrade of equipment type. The
specific question is; how are positions determined when an A330 pairing contains
a segment operated with either a B767 or B757?
Contractually this is equipment substitution.
For example:
The CLT-LGW segment of A330 pairing #12345 CLT-LGW-CLT downgrades to a B767. As
a result, the most senior flight attendants have the option to either work the
segment or DH (at 100% pay/credit) on the initial B767 segment. Position
selection for the B767 segment is based on seniority for the working crew
members. Position selection for the LGW-CLT segment operated on the A330 is once
again determined by seniority among the entire crew as the entire crew will work
the return segment.
Please keep in mind two things:
1 - Primary lineholders cannot be displaced from their primary awarded
position (unless as a result of the downgrade, the position does not exist).
2 - The Contract language in Section 9-35 regarding splitting onto a
pairing and position selection is not applicable in this case. Section 9-35
refers to flight attendants splitting onto a pairing as the result of flight
attendant or company initiated splits such as sick, illegal through no fault,
jury duty, etc. In those instances flight attendants cannot use their seniority
to displace a flight attendant from her/his previous position as determined by
the initial position selection upon the origination of the pairing.
