Sick Charge When a Reserve Has
"Exhausted His/Her Sick Bank"
Written by
Carol Austin MEC Scheduling Chair- Placed on Wings for future referencing
The purpose of this
article is to make known to Reserves a glitch which exists within the sick
charging program. This glitch only affects a Reserve without a sick bank
who splits off sick after working a portion of a duty period(s). Highlighted is
a Reserve that was incorrectly deducted a daily sick rate for a day she actually
worked and reported sick as well (split off sick). Shown below are the
circumstances when the glitch occurs, the formula for charging, and what to do
if something similar happens to you.
Circumstances:
The Reserve called in sick after flying 5+01 of DP1 on February 2nd. The
computer should “not” have deducted a 3+51 for DP 1 from her guarantee but did;
therefore, an error was made at this point. Note: 5+01 was reflected in her
LTO.
Formula:
Guarantee of 73:00
divided 19 day = 3:51 daily rate deduction. See page 8-5 line 22 of the
Contract. Note: February had 19 AVL days for Reserves which is utilized in the
formula for charging sick days when a Reserve has an exhausted Sick Bank.

Program Deducted From Guarantee
|
Worked 5+01 of DP 1, and split off
sick February 2nd |
Computer program deducted 3+51 - daily
rate |
"not" applicable |
|
Sick removal - DP 2, February 3rd |
Computer program deducted 3+51 - daily
rate |
applicable |
|
Sick removal - DP 3, February 4th |
Computer program deducted 3+51 - daily
rate |
applicable |
|
Sick removal - DP 4, February 5th |
Computer program deducted 3+51 - daily
rate |
applicable |
|
*Sick Call - AVL Day, February 6th |
Computer program deducted 3+51 - daily
rate |
applicable |
Note: *The Reserve was in
the 5+01 Grouping. She was legal for one day. At her LTO she would have
received a turn - CLT to Fort Lauderdale and back on February 6th;
therefore, Scheduling entered into remarks (REM) a utilization code applicable.
The Fix to Correct the DP1
Error:
Per Claims
Administration, a repayment request for 3:51 of reserve guarantee was sent to
payroll for this flight attendant. Such payment will appear on the F/A’s 30Mar11
pay. Moving forward, if you are a Reserve who finds themselves in this
situation please contact your AFA Local Executive Council Office (LEC). In
turn, your local officers will take down your information and contact Claims
Administration so a manual work around can be accomplished to recover any
incorrect deduction. Note: This error will only occur on a day
when a Reserve splits off sick after working a portion of the duty period.
Also Remember:
1) A Bid month with 19
AVL days for Reserves. Guarantee of 73:00 divided 19 day = 3:51 daily rate
deduction for a flight attendant “without” a sick bank.
2) A Bid month with 20
AVL days for Reserves. Guarantee of 73:00 divided 20 day = 3:39 daily rate
deduction for a flight attendant “without” a sick bank

Summary - Use of Sick Call
With Accrued Time in Sick Bank:
Please keep in mind that the above formula differs from how a Reserve would be
charged if he/she has adequate time in his/her sick bank. Per page 8-4
starting on line 13 states, in part: A Reserve with accrued sick leave will be
charged 3+30 or trips missed whichever is greater for each day he/she is unable
to report. A Reserve will only be charged for day(s) on which he/she was or
would have been called. Such amounts will be reflected in his/her LTO. Or it
will be unpaid depending on status.
