Dear Members,

AFA LOSES DELTA REPRESENTATIONAL ELECTION

AFA sent out a press release (copied below) this afternoon following the results of the Delta/Northwest representational election.

The election result hit the Northwest flight attendants the hardest as they will lose their contract and the protections it contains. The vote leaves in its wake the largest flight attendant workforce in the country without any union representation and hands Delta management unilateral rights to impose terms and work rules of their choosing and not as the result of collective bargaining process.

That has serious implications for all of us - particularly those of us presently in negotiations. US Airways has various competitors on various fronts. US Airways will now be bargaining against not only AFA but against Delta in terms of overall cost to a flight attendant labor agreement.

I don't see any airline management being benevolent that does not have to be - especially not this one at US Airways. That said, this union and negotiating committee have not thrown in the towel and will continue our efforts to bring to a close our negotiations with a positive result for our members.

On behalf of the US Airways Master Executive Council, I want to wish our best to all the former Northwest flight attendants and their colleagues at Delta who supported union representation by AFA. Also a special thanks goes out to all the AFA members who worked tirelessly in a valiant struggle to maintain and extend representational rights to our fellow safety professionals.

Thank you,

Mike Flores, President
The US Airways Master Executive Council

NORTHWEST FLIGHT ATTENDANTS' COLLECTIVE BARGAINING RIGHTS EXTINGUISHED AFTER 60 YEARS

Washington, DC - Northwest flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), were informed by the National Mediation Board (NMB) today that their collective bargaining rights they fought to maintain for 63 years will soon be extinguished. Patricia Friend, AFA-CWA International President, issued the following statement after the vote count:

"We are extremely disappointed that once again, Delta management overwhelmed flight attendants with heavy handed intimidation and coercion of voters. They stopped at nothing to keep Delta flight attendants from gaining a voice and advancing their profession.

"While Northwest flight attendants find themselves in an unfamiliar environment, AFA-CWA will do everything we can to continue to fight on their behalf. The contribution to our profession over the past six decades will never be forgotten and we look forward to the day when we welcome them back to the world's largest flight attendant union.

"In the next few days, we will be submitting interference charges against Delta management for their illegal and unfair methods to sway the vote. We will ask the National Mediation Board to defend the Delta flight attendants' right to an election free of interference.

"While we say goodbye for now to our Northwest colleagues, we are more resolved than ever to continue our long tradition of working for all flight attendants. Today, we stand together in solidarity and pledge to continue our efforts to preserve the integrity of our profession and the viability of our airlines. We will continue the work of raising the profession for all."

For over 60 years, the Association of Flight Attendants has been serving as the voice for flight attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill. More than 42,000 flight attendants at 21 airlines come together to form AFA-CWA, the world's largest flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afanet.org.
