AMERICAN AIRLINES FILES FOR CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY REORGANIZATION

As you may have heard, AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle, filed a voluntary petition for Chapter 11 reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York. American released a statement saying, "We took this action to order to achieve a cost and debt structure that is industry competitive and thereby assure our long-term viability and ability to continue delivering a world-class travel experience for customers."

As we all know, bankruptcy is very painful for employees. Both East and West MECs are ready to assist our fellow AFA members at American Eagle as well as our flight attendant colleagues at American Airlines.

During the coming weeks and months there will be a great deal of speculation and rumor about a potential merger involving US Airways. For now, anything you may hear is purely speculative. AFA will monitor the situation as it unfolds and keep you informed.

Our current mediated negotiations will continue as planned. Last month the JNC conducted update meetings at all four East and West domiciles in order to outline the status of negotiations after the completion of our last scheduled joint session in late September. Updates were posted on our websites and mailed to your homes.

The JNC meet for four (4) days this month in order to prepare counter proposals on Compensation, Hours of Service and Vacation. Our counter proposals resulted in the NMB calling for an additional joint negotiation session; December 12th thru December 14th in PHX. The JNC sees this as a very positive step toward reaching a tentative agreement.

WE will keep you informed on negotiations as the process continues.

Thank you,

Mike Flores, President
The US Airways East Master Executive Council AFA-CWA

Deborah Volpe, President
The US Airways West Master Executive Council AFA-CWA
