Dear Members,
Protected Holiday SAPPING – How Does It Work
By Carol Austin-AFA Scheduling Chairperson
Sally was awarded a December primary line worth
78+30. It was comprised of three day trips on the 4th, 11th,
18th, 25th, and the 31st. In this example,
each three day trip is worth 18+00 and the trip leading out has a credit of
6+30. Sally’s SAPPING goal was to be off Christmas Day. The following will show
how she achieved her goal via SAP even though Christmas Day is a protected
holiday. In her first bid she tried to “Drop” Christmas Day out right (Section
9.C.3.e.) but understood that for the purposes of a minimum of 15% trips
remaining in open time (O/T) that was probably not going to be awarded because
in her base SAP started with 30% O/T. Sally read in the Contract (page 9-8 line
45) that December 24th and December 25th is treated as one
protected holiday. What that means in SAP is that touching one date is like
touching the other date. See example:

By swapping a trip that originates on Dec.25th
for a trip that terminates on Dec. 24th Sally has NOT
increased the percentage of holiday open time. If one of the trips in her ADD
column is available, at her seniority, it will be awarded as long as it is
legal. Through SAP, Sally is trying to better her position for the bid sheet
(AIL). By using this technique she may be able to trip improve off her SAP
awarded trip and be off Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It worked for Sally
and she rejoices! Note: Sally did not have to bid by way of the expanded bid
method she could have bid individual trip pairings but it was just easier for
her this way.
Trip Touch: Trips that check-out at
midnight or after midnight in SAP can be used as a “touch” just as
they are in Primary lines or AIL awards even on protected holidays. The example
below reflects how Adam uses SAP to adjust his schedule around the holidays.

Holiday Touch Exceptions: A holiday
touch discussed above does not apply to certain pairing combinations.
Why? The dropping activity, shown below, increases the O/T pool for the affected
Holiday(s). In other words, two originating trips would be going back into O/T
and only one originating trip going out
1) Dropping
two ODAN trips (23rd & 24th) for one originating trip that touches the
24th. Denied
2) Dropping
two Red Eye trips (ck-out 24th + ck-in 24th) for one
originating trip that touches the 24th. Denied
3) Dropping
two day trips (24th & 25th) for one originating trip
that touches the 24th. Denied
Entering “DROP” Bids Is Different In a
Protected Holiday Month:
The system does not allow Non-Holiday Drops
within a Unit that contains a Protected Holiday Drop
Reference Data December 2008 -
Dec 24th & 25th:
The following list was compiled to give you an idea of the
“Open Positions” percentages directly related to this protected holiday:
CLT - Start: 29% End: 28%
BOS – Start: 15%: End: 15%, DCA- Start: 22% End: 21%,
PHL - Start: 30% End: 29%,
LGA - Start: 21% End: 20%
Reference Data December 2008-
Dec 31st: The
following list was compiled to give you an idea of the “Open Positions”
percentages directly related to this protected holiday:
CLT - Start: 26 End: 22%
BOS
– Start: 15%: End: 6%, DCA- Start: 18% End: 16%,
PHL - Start: 29% End: 26%,
LGA - Start: 20% End: 16%
As you can see from the
statistics shown above all percentages of open time started and ended at or
above the 15%. Only BOS ended with a percentage below the contract minimum
whereby drops would be allowed because other flight attendants picked up Company
Time on the holiday.
