Safety On Board

June 13, 2009

Dear Members,

Safety News for June 2009

You can make copies of this and any other E-Lines and share them with your fellow flight attendants. Majority of the items that are discussed here can be found in the IEM.

Your IEM is your sole responsibility. No matter who checks your IEM out on the line the final decision rests with you."Each F/A is responsible for maintaining the entire contents of the IEM and FAIM inside a binder and keeping it up-to-date.

Please be sure to update your information including contact phone numbers not only with the company but also with AFA-CWA. In the SRS (Safety Reporting System), while filing out an SER be sure to include your FAA certification number. To get into the SRS system your password is the last four digits of your social security number.

On the AB321 a/c the "A" f/a jumpseat position is forward inboard (closes to the aisle). If in doubt about any jump seat position please consult the individual section of your IEM.

Fluorescent bulbs do not give off heat. Therefore, for boarding, safety demonstrations and deplaning all cabin lights must be on bright.
On the AB 320 a/cs in the small overhead bins where the escape ropes/lanyards are located, nothing else should be in these bins including demo equipment.

Refrain from storing your suitcase in meal cart.

For passengers seated in an exit row seat that does not have a seat back pocket directly in front of them, point out the location of that passenger's safety information card prior to conducting the exit seat verification. This means on the AB 321 and the B757 a/cs. If the passenger cannot reach the card from a seated position then please hand them the Safety Instruction Card.

Pets in the cabin must remain in their carriers. As a flight attendant refrain from touching or playing with these pets.

If the captain instructs you to perform duties believed to be in conflict with the company policies and procedures, respectfully bring it to his/her attention but abide by the instructions. If the instructions remain, submit a Safety Event Report (SER) and a written statement to your supervisor. Be sure and send or leave a copy for your AFA-CWA officer(s).

Seat back pockets are not design to restrain carry-on items. Items such as laptop computers, CD players and other portable electronic devices should be properly stowed in appropriate carry-on stowage areas.

With SERs being totally electronic, be sure and make a copy for yourself and AFA-CWA before clicking on the submit button.

Throughout the year the company undergoes several audits, inspections and testing of our safety and security systems. If something does not appear to be right ….then challenge the individual or problem. Be sure and report the situation by filling out an SER. Be on your guard at all times when on US Airways' property.

"Safety is the Ultimate Service!"
