Safety On Board

December 1, 2008

Dear Members,
  • There have been quite a few IEM (InFlight Emergency Manual) violations.  This includes missing Alert Bulletins, missing revisions and in some cases missing pages.  No matter who inspects your manual prior to attending R/T and says "it is up to date."  The person ultimately responsible for the manual is the person it is issued to and that is YOU!

  • If you don't write up an incident on an SER, then it did not happen. When you do complete an SER, remember to keep a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your local safety committee representative. When filling out an SRS on line be sure to use your new six digit pay/employee number. Under certain categories on the SER it is now a procedure for the FAA Cabin Safety Inspector(s) to interview the passenger(s).
  • When you are the "A or CSD" F/A, during your briefing confirm/ask your fellow F/A(s) if they have an updated IEM, ID and passport?  It is part of the required briefing(s).

  • If you are on an aircraft that has no potable water, you should be supplied with handy wipes or sanitary wipes.  "SANI-COM 3295" may NOT be used or substituted.  SANI-COM 3295 is to be used only to clean and freshen communications and oxygen equipment.

  • All flights coming from ANY international destination must be cleared by CBP (Customs Border Patrol) before cleaners and/or caters may enter the aircraft.

  • Cleanliness and hand washing are good measures to take in prevention of illness, especially this time of the year.

  • CRS (Child Restraint System) is any approved seat or device used to restrain children on an aircraft. US Airways supports the use of FAA approved CRS's to help ensure safety.  This is covered in the IEM Sec.5: 24-26, as well as the Recurrent Training Study Guide p.4.

  • AQ (Air Quality) Cards are available from your safety representatives be sure and get one.

  • If you are having problems with jump seats or the jump seat belts/restraint system be sure and inform the crewmember in charge. In addition inform your local AFA-CWA safety committee representative of the issue(s). Remember documentation, documentation!!!

  • Always check your jump seat to be sure it retracts immediately upon you standing up and the direct-view jump seat on the AB319, 320 and AB 321 a/c must snap closed, without assistance and lock to the wall, no exceptions. Notify the "A" F/A as soon as possible.  The "A" F/A will then notify the Captain so he/she can call maintenance.

  • If you have lost your Exit Row Briefing card (with the Monitor and Challenge verbiage on the other side) stop by a crew service center and get a new one.  Remember to read the card for verbatim when briefing exit row passengers.

  • Everyone MUST do Monitor and Challenge, whether it is team or self M&C. This is NOT an option, it is a requirement.

  • The Carry-On baggage regulations have not changed and passengers are allowed ONE carry-on and ONE personal item and this includes a purse.

  • During boarding/pre departure DO NOT place bottles of water out in the f/c cabin.  As a reminder any item served must be collected prior to takeoff.  FAR 121.577

  • Military personnel are allowed and or permitted to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages.

  • It is the responsibility of all US Airways employees to prevent any person who appears to be intoxicated from boarding the aircraft. If a passenger who appears to be intoxicated is discovered during flight, notify the Captain and other F/As of the situation.  All F/As will be advised of the intoxicated passenger’s seat location, with instructions to discontinue alcoholic beverage service to the passenger. Sec 5.14.3

  • In the state of Florida we do NOT serve alcoholic beverages in the pre departure service.  Check your manifest/final report for instructions concerning Canada and New Mexico

  • Whenever you have a question or concerns please reference your IEM.  That is one of the main reasons why we are required to carry it.

***If you have an incident or question and don’t notify us, we can't be very effective in helping you.  Please call your Air Safety, Health and Security Rep(s) as we are available to you and ready to assist.

Thank You,
