Your Negotiating Committee continues to travel throughout the system during the month of February to meet and talk with our members. Lynn Lenosky, Terry Graf and Mark Littleton will be in the crew rooms. The location and dates are as follows:
Pittsburgh, Friday,
February 19
Philadelphia, Monday,
February 22
Charlotte, Friday, February
26
The Committee will be in each base from 0600 until 2100. In addition to the Negotiating Committee members, Local NSC members will be on hand to distribute AFA pins and yellow ribbons. The committee wishes to thank the many Flight Attendants in Boston, Washington, and Baltimore who took the time to stop by to talk to the committee members.
IMPRESSIONS OF EXCELLENCE TRAINING
For those Flight Attendants
who have yet to attend the Human Resources Department’s “Impression of
Excellence” training, please be advised that the company may assign a training
date to a Flight Attendant. If the company assigns training on a day off
for a reserve Flight Attendant, the reserve is entitled to receive another
day off to compensate for it. For those Flight Attendants who do
not wish to be assigned a training date, you have the contractual right
to bid your training date as described on Page 21-1, paragraph D.
As a reminder, if training is scheduled on a day of work and the
Flight Attendant is unsuccessful in rescheduling it to an off day, the
training is “pay and credit” toward the Flight Attendant’s monthly obligation.
AFA WINS GRIEVANCE ON INTERNATIONAL TRIP DROPS
In 1998 AFA was forced to
file a grievance against the company based on their refusal to permit transoceanic
Flight Attendants the ability to drop any trip in their block due to overprojection.
AFA prevailed in our belief that this was a clear violation of the terms
of International Transoceanic Domicile Agreement which does not contain
any restrictions on dropping a trip within the Division. As stipulated
in the agreement, crew scheduling will be notified immediately and change
their practice.
IMPACT AFA COMING TO A CITY NEAR YOU
IMPACT AFA is an acronym for Involving More People and Creating Transformation. The program was designed by Flight Attendants for Flight Attendants. IMPACT AFA will offer members a new connection to their union and a new understanding of the need to grow internally and externally. The interactive workshop will offer members insight into our value and will become a vision for members into the 21st Century. IMPACT AFA will examine the differences between myths and truths of our profession and explore our role as safety and service professionals.
The three hour workshop will
be held in CLT on both February 24th and 25th from 11am to
2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Woodlawn. More sessions will be announced at
a later date. Please pre-register by calling the International office at
800-424-2401
ext. 826.
RESERVE BOOKS TO BE UPDATED WEEKLY
The Company has agreed to place the Reserve Books in the crew rooms of all bases. Additionally, they have agreed to update the books weekly. If you encounter any problems with accessing this book in your base or it is not being updated, please let your base manager and LEC office know.

MASTER
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL HOLDS FIRST MEETING OF 1999
Your MEC conducted their
first regularly scheduled meeting in Washington, DC. Among the many items
of business the LEC Presidents acted upon during the five day meeting was
the election of DCA Flight Attendant, Michelle Morris as LTD Board Alternate,
the appointment of PHL LEC President Bill Lynn as System Board Alternate,
and approval of the 1999 budget. Additionally, the decision was made to
post for the vacancy left on the Negotiating Committee by the resignation
of DCA Flight Attendant, Steve Capps. The LEC Presidents referred the issue
of whether or not to reopen option bidding to the Negotiating Committee.
Finally, the MEC passed two resolutions of support, one for the America
West Flight Attendants in the struggle for their first contract and the
other for the renunciation of the Bermuda II treaty. For more detailed
meeting information please contact your LEC or the MEC Secretary. The next
MEC meeting will be held in Boston during the month of June. Your MEC encourages
all active members to attend.
INTERNATIONAL
OVERPROJECTION TRIP DROPS FOR VACATION
It appears that some confusion
existed for the Transatlantic Division Flight Attendants as to which trip
values should be considered when determining overprojection in a vacation
month. Senior Director of Inflight Administration, Rob Fuhr, has agreed
with AFA to use the value of the lowest time trip in the base for
purposes of determining whether a trip/s can be dropped due to overprojection
in a month in which vacation is scheduled. Please contact your Local union
office if you require more information or encounter any problems concerning
dropping trip/s for overprojection.
AFA
SCHOLARSHIP FUND OFFERS TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR FLIGHT ATTENDANTS AND THEIR
FAMILIES
AFA offers a scholarship
fund that can help offset some of the associated costs for attending college.
If you want more information about this fund, please contact AFA's International
Office at 1-800-424-2401. Applications can be obtained from your Local
union office, the International Office or by writing to the AFA Scholarship
Fund at P.O. Box 212, Warrendale, VA 20188. Applications must be received
by April 10, 1999.
This is your opportunity
to let your voice be heard. Your local elected officers represent
you to US Airways management and to the union at the Master Executive Council
and Board of Directors level where many important issues are resolved.
Your future is in
your voting hands.
FIFTEEN
(15:00) HOUR DUTY DAY, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
The contract states in Section
10.H.3 that “a Flight Attendant will not be required to
remain on duty more than fifteen (15:00) hours.” For example, a trip is
scheduled for a duty day of 13:45 with the last leg scheduled for a duty
day of 13:45 with the last leg scheduled for 1:30. Snow is causing
system delays and now the trip is running late. If by flying the
last leg would put you over 15 hours, you have the right to be replaced
for legality reasons. Notify crew scheduling that you will not fly
over 15 hours. Remember, only the scheduled times of the last leg are to
be used. Additionally, for international transoceanic trips, Flight Attendants
are limited to a maximum of 16:00 on duty (with IRO) and 15:00 on duty
(without IRO). Notify your LEC office of any problems.
WINTER
HITS THE EAST COAST
Due to severe weather in
the northeast many Flight Attendants have experienced rescheduled and canceled
trips. In the event that you are rescheduled keep in mind that crew
scheduling must notify you of your remaining duty assignment for the day
and the balance of the trip within one (1) hour of being notified of the
rescheduling. Any Flight Attendant who is rescheduled will be paid
for time lost from his/her originally scheduled trip, or actual time, whichever
is greater. If you experience any problems or have a claim denied,
please be sure to notify your LEC office.
